Generating traffic on your forum or website is very important because it's the only way you can be able to grow your forum project and likely start making money from it.
But in a situation where the traffic that you're getting on your forum isn't what's beneficial to you, how do you go about setting it right to root out such traffic and target the right traffic that's going to work better for you?

Well, I don't really want to root out any traffic, unless they are rude and/or causing problems. However, though, I don't - to encourage visits (in the sense of paying especially) from people who aren't interested in my product enough. Well, that's the problem with cheap traffic companies. They bring in traffic the wrong way. In that case, you don't get the best people.
Of course, the assumption here is that I am trying to make money. If it's some hobby site, then everyone is welcome unless they cause problems. Actually, even in commercial forums, I want as much visits as possible from everyone, but I can only pay or use my time to get "hot traffic", as already explained.
