My previous phpBB forum was hacked (so people tell me) via a wordpress plugin, and as a result I lost the lot.

Does anyone know if there is a list of plugins that have exploit issues, I want to avoid the same problem again.

Or is it just best to host a blog on the wordpress server ?

Honestly there are a lot of wordpress plugins that are hackable, but you can never list them all. Just stick to using popular plugins that are updated daily, that way you can be sure it's safe to use them. I made that mistake when I used a plugin that was last updated a year ago and someone managed to hack my wordpress blog. They uploaded malicious code so whenever people visited the website they would get a virus. Thankfully I closed down the website and cleaned it up before anybody got heart by it. It was thanks to a lot of my viewers massing me with emails at 4 in the morning. My phone went insane.

Thanks for that, I think when I get it up and running again I'll just stick to the more popular nes as you say, seems you have to learn the hard way on the interweb, and trust no one

Yeah wordpress seems to have a lot of insecure or malicious plugins. Check through user feedback to see which ones are recommended.
