How short can a username of a member be on your forum? Why do some forums require a certain amount of characters for each username?

What do you want a short name in the first place? We encourage all the members to use their real names. As long as the niche is legal, there should not be any problem in revealing it. Shorter names over a period of time will be used up and new members wont have any options.

I don't think I have ever seen a username shorter than 3 characters...I don't see a problem with just having a letter or number as a username...they are creating their own username, so why place restrictions on it that prevent it from being short?

I don't see a problem myself in allowing members to have a short username however I have mine set so that they can not have any less than 3 characters and no more than 15. I have a few members on my forum who have 3 letters for a username mainly because it is their nickname and with it being a general chat forum we encourage members to use their nicknames :)

Most forums have a 3 char minimum set by the software, Why should it matter how short the username is? It should be about the quality of the member right?

ours is 3, which is the default.

ive never seen a username shorter than 3 letters long though

I don't really mind about 1 letter usernames so I set it to the minimum is 1 character. :)

I always set my minimum amount at 3 characters. Considering I used to use the name GAK, I was pushing the limit and others use three letter names too. I've never seen a two or one letter name, and that would just look like a spammer tbh.
  9. ShadyX Who else?

Ours is 3 here and that came by default, I might consider lowering it in the future though :) Not sure why anyone would object to people using smallish usernames.

Usually the minimum is 3 characters. I agree with gak about 1 and 2 letter usernames, I would mainly associate that with spammers ;)

Why? lol.. have you seen any one or two letter spammers? :p

I think they are pretty cool like short domains: http://t.co for example.
  12. Darthmaul Uncle Darth

No because the minimum is usually 3 letters :p
Short domain names are cool, yeah, but not usernames imo

Doesn't matter what someone is called IMO.

3 by default on my forum, but I think that is a semi decent length for anybody. May lower it down to 2 though for those who wish to use their initials. I would hope they have no qualms about doing so. Like the rest though, I've never seen a user with a name shorter than 3 characters so they must be a rare and endangered species. ;o

The default of three must be poaching! ;)
  17. I'd rather a forum member use their real name and not a convoluted long name consisting of nonsense letters/characters. But if they want to use a short username, that's alright too.
  18. It's foolish question that you asked. almost forum require 3 word least.
excuse me, if i hurted you.
  19. Terry Member

Definitely 3 word character. even we've members of 3 words.:)
