Is it right or wrong to sell a forums database off to the highest bidder? I mean you are dealing with very sensitive information that if it fell in to the wrong hands could pose as a security threat to a large userbase.
I don't thing it is right as you said is contains very sensitive information such as e-mail, birthday and other user info as could post a security risk and also could lead to identity theft.
No offense, but if you get your identity stolen from a forum's database, then you were absolutely dumb with your decisions; there's no reason why that should happen. As for selling databases, I have no problem with it, but I really wouldn't be interested in doing that as I believe that a forum should make their own history. Plus, I wouldn't really like to see my content on someone else's forum, it would feel weird.
True Darth forum databases don't really contain that much info at all except maybe your real name, birthday and contact info which you can't really use to do any harm except use your e-mail to send you spam, after what you said Darth I would be okay with selling a forum database as long as the sale includes the forum the database is associated with.
Well it depends. I think it's wrong in most senses- but thats how some forums like p2h forums add to their income to provide a service....
I personally think it is wrong unless it is sold as a package (domain, files, database, host, etc.) OR you are told what will be happening to your details as I find it extremely annoying when I join one site, only to find that six months later it's been sold on and now my details are with another forum and owner because the boards were merged...
As a member i dont care much, but im little bothered when they stills end mass emails from new and new boards.
