I done a short SEO course and I was advised to gather quality links by connecting with similar suppliers. I worked on this over a week period and managed to get a pretty impressive 60 or so links. This moved me from the bottom of page three to almost the top of page 2 so I was very happy.

On the course I was advised to turn my link to nofollow as the more links you have leaving your site the more damaging it is to yours. So after a while I added the nofollow code. Then that same week I dropped from page top of page 2 to the bottom of page 4. In my limited experience of SEO is something isn't working change it back quickly. I immediately change the removed nofollow and the same day I was back up on page 2!

I don't know if its possible to be penalised for nofollow but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has ever experienced this? Also I had a good look at my competitor’s sites and they all have link pages with tones of links and are all links are follow. Despite the amount of links they have it isn't affecting their good rankings. So maybe this nofollow isn't very important to have and even harmful to have??? The guy listed as number two on Google had more than 400 links! Crazy numbers!! And all of his are follow and are only one click away from his home page. his not having any diffculty with his Google rankings with 400 external follow links.

That's weird, maybe I should experiment with this on my forum which I have set to no-follow.
