Recently we migrated from Phpbb3 to SMF with pretty urls and have had a significant loss in our traffic, though we managed to redirect some of them with modrewrite in .htaccess. Now we have enough funds to go either for xenforo or VB, and very worried about losing traffic again. Any suggestions?
Nothing at all. If you can do the modrewrite code in the .htacess file, you can safely redirect all the indexed URL to your new topics.
I moved my forum over from vBulletin to Xenforo in January and I managed to redirect all mine and my traffic doesn't seem to have dropped at all. I had someone do the move over and redirect everything as I wasn't 100% sure how to do it. If you know how to your best bet is to do that so you don't lose traffic.
It failed because SMF sux if you upgrade your forum to xenforo people would love itand more people will come but im telling you that would be beter 80%
Yes, tell someone to spend 140 bucks(if they don't have it) instead of suggesting a free alternative. SMF "Sucking" really is subjective. I'm curious ho you are doing now. I personally would(if you were going to buy software) skip over XF and go IPB. a much more mature software with a better developmeny path.
yeah, true, I was once bitten by the SMF bug and had to pay up a huge cost. I would've been better off with phpbb3. Thankfully, before it is too late, I shifted my forum to VB.
If you are much worried in doing that alone. I can help you as I have a lot of experience in it. I can even make the forum rise from 0 post to >>> at faster rates.
Migrated a forum from myBB to VB - lost half the traffic and 80% of the google traffic (messed up the permalinks). Took few months to recover, but it was a better choice anyway
