Oh noes!

You need 20 posts to be able to download resources, post links and other things. Read more...

What is the minimum amount of posts or topics a forum should open with in any niche? In my opinion they should open with no less than 500 posts spread out evenly between all of the sections in the forum. I am sick of visiting new forums that open with 5 posts and I think 500 is the perfect number.

    What do you think?

I think each section of the forum should have 5 relevent topics in before launching to give it that initial content.

Less than 500 posts really isn't acceptable, so I agree with you there ;)
It's quite annoying everyone trying to rush the opening process. However, if you take the time to do like 1k good solid posts, you'll have an awesome opening. I opened with a bit more than 700 posts, a good as number as any. It really just depends on how dedicated you want to be ;)

Ideally before you go public it's best to have around ten members posting regularly, building up the content, I'd say once you get to 1k of posts thats the time to start getting Google and other search engines interested, they will find you anyway, but verification helps a lot more.

Well just out of curiosity these 5 threads in each section, should the forum owner post them? :/ Coz if you are opening a forum well quite alone how would you go through the launch?

yes, they should, and then there is something for people to reply to when you do invite your first members to join-ive been asked by friends to help launch their forums, and its always harder when there are no posts at all, so i prefer it when the admin has created starter threads.

the best way to do it (that ive seen, anyway) is start some threads on your own, and then invite a few friends or people who you think would be interested to help with replies and creating more threads, so you have a bit of activity before you launch.

If you pick the right people threads will be created naturally, what you need as I have already stated is a core of people ready to contribute, 10 would be a minimum, 50 at best, so you need to advertise for contributors before you launch.
It's much easier if you start a blog with the forum, content for a blog is easier to manage, that will in turn give you idea's for threads to create on the forum.

What if I dont have a core of people? Can I still keep my hopes up? :/
  11. Dorfy Review Team

Yes but it will be harder, I'm going through that process now, only 5 or 6 regular posters, but since December 8th we have over 600 threads and 2000 posts.

One great help is an RSS feed from other sites, into a hidden forum, gives me lots of idea's for threads

Yes I got to agree on this, RSS feeds from another website. But is it legal? to export them to a forum?

Export them to a hidden section, then re-write the article before posting in the normal forums, it gives you content & outgoing links

Great idea I will try it :)

I don't find there to be a set amount of content so long as the owner at least has some threads up about the rules and of course threads about the forum subject itself. For example if it is a graphics forum, the owner should have the simple threads up. His/hers own gallery, what is your favorite design software, favorite style, and how long have you been designing? I don't think an absolute defined number is really necessary though.

Getting 500 posts is not that easy. Most new forums would kill for this number :D

I always start my community with at least 50+ threads that would get people 'rolling'. If you have few people to help out, you can get to 500 with no problem, but the biggest issue for me with some new forums is not that they have low postcounts (my forum is also small), but that they don't have challenging topics. Well, if you ain't gonna start some nice threads, no one will do it for you :D

For me, when opening any type of website I try to make sure it has a tasty amount of topics and posts for other people to get stuck into. For every forum type it will differ but I would expect any new forum to have at least 200+ posts with 5+ threads in each forum, Thats just personal preference.

I think I opened AH with nearly 200+ posts :D

I think a couple hundred posts and topics evenly spread throughout the forums is a good start. It's always easy to have a couple friends or staff members to help you out too.

About 100 posts in each section would do me :)
