How many admins are needed for a Forum?

Discussion in 'Content, Staff & Member Discussion' started by kavin, Aug 22, 2011.

Oh noes!

You need 20 posts to be able to download resources, post links and other things. Read more...

Honestly, the most I would ever need to have is 2(me and another). Any more and it goes hand-in-hand with the "too many cooks in a kitchen" sort of thing. Usually, you end up with too many staff, or not enough, and when you have three admins you step on each others toes a bit. You go and do things that the others may not want, one of you is never on, etc. It just helps a ton if I am the one in charge, with some moderators and a few other minor staff. The only reason I could justify needing another admin is if I did not have enough time to handle my commitments, then I would hire another admin from a well-groomed team of moderators. At this point my forum would have at least 50k + posts ;)

In my opinion only one is necessary until you reach a size that you are not comfortable or capable of managing on your own, I also prefer to be the only administrator as @Darthmaul said it is better when you can make decisions for yourself and not have to contact other people and run it by them. I am a very strong and independent person, I get along with people but I like doing things my own way.

Really I find that if you can make your forum at the start great then you don't need another admin half way. You already did one of the hardest task of an admin which is to make the forum active and get people to post. Now maybe if you want to add lots of new features and layouts and other things that just take too much time then you can get another admin. But if ever the forum starts to get too active, then it is just best to get another mod instead. I also like working alone or in a partnership. Anything more just becomes too confusing and just doesn't work out. I been in forums with 10+ admins. The actual owner visits the site like once and month. So when someone has a suggestion, half the admins agree and half don't and the suggestions ends up being ignored cause no one agrees.

N o more than 2 at any time, the mods can handle the best part of it.

I always preferred doing things solo as it meant not having to deal with other people who both disagree and have the power to change things in ways you don't want them done. Besides, I never really saw the need for more then one anyway as there isn't much that needs to be done in the acp after you set it up.

In my opinion it is best to keep the management team small and not above 2 admins.

Just me as an admin is fine but maybe one more along the line when things get difficult to manage by myself but other than me and another admin I wouldnt hire anymore. Who needs like 5 admins on a forum?

I usually would only go with 2 admins per forum at most. I do not see the point of having "tons" of admins to run one site. It really is pointless.

First two years should have one admin. Later in the future and several 100K posts later there should be two more. Only if the activity of the other two admins go down.

Two at most, and then delegate tasks to other people like Mods, Designers...

  15. Depending how big it is really and maybe what sort of community it is

I have a small community and currently only I run it. I hate it when I see 10 staff members on a small board. Just means that the owner can't find another way of getting traffic.

1 admin is enough for any forum for locating activities on their forum. Rest of the work done by Moderators who are locating there on different Sub-forums.

Just one until we get pretty large. Why would a forum need like 12 admins?
  19. dojo Active Member

ONE. All the others should be moderators. Exception: when you're working on someone else's forum. I have a client and I help manage his blogs and forums. He's the main admin and I also have admin powers to do my job. Otherwise you have 1 admin and 'help' from others. I don't like it when more people are running the show since in most cases the end is not sweet.

It depends.. Depends on the skills of the sole owner and what he's looking for ^^ If he's not very tech savy, then another admin is good to have around ^^

Maybe another or tow to help with the forum side of things.. Having semi alot of admins is good for when the sole admins can't be on ^^
