How do you think of domain names for your websites?

I always get a sore head while trying to think them up lol.

When I think up domain names for a project I always try to aim for something short, and maybe catchy, but that's not a requirement :p
I also never use numbers in the domain name.

Lol, I know that feeling I am exactly the same and usually when I think of one I really like it is always taken which annoys me. I have now resorted to brainstorming before I sit at the computer and getting a set of names for my website that I feel will really work for example a general chat forum so I will brainstorm and think of good names for my site that will be easy to remember and not too long, once I have a long enough list I will then sit at the computer and go through them one by one doing it in different ways until I get a domain name that is available that I am happy with. It's very time consuming but does work out in the end :)

Brainstorm. I think of all thing related to the topic of my website, write down all possible variations, and then i pick something short, catchy and relevant.
  7. I come up with an idea or theme. I then go to a deleted domain name website and so some search with the keywords and theme and see if something in there strikes me.
I them search through namecheap for combos or something better.

I just think of a niche then try putting letters into onepiece and scrumble them. Like if: Survival camp for kids you can go with S.C.F.K :D

A domain name is the root web address for a Website, such as about.com. Having keywords in your domain name only makes a difference to your SEO when your domain name is the exact-match keyword that you want to rank for AND is the .com or local .com version (eg .com.au) of the keyword.

Try to make it as short as you can, and if you can't, make it easy to remember. For instance, Admin Forums is much easier to remember than let's say, Online Forum For Admins Or Webmasters. However, having a long name doesn't mean it is all bad. Three words can make a good impression too. Look at the owner of Forum Promotion, Fergal. His business forum is called Business Advice Forum. Now that in my eyes is a great name and it's very easy to remember.
  14. Domain is the first glance visitors have so it should contain a word that is about website. Like if website is of Fitness it better contain that word like fitnessfreak or else.
But honestly i really got fed up with this that whenever i think of domain thinking for 10's of minutes and then try to buy it and it says unavailable then ---:(---.

I usually go to a site and start typing in names, kinda brainstorming.

I actually recently purchased and am using a .me domain name, so we will see how that works out... haha.

It usually starts with an idea for a site to begin with.

Then I start thinking of key words that would sum it up. The main ones are almost always going to be taken, but as I start looking through and checking them, a lot of times GoDaddy with recommend a word or variation that I didn't even think of. Then I wait for one to really jump out to me and see if it's available.

I agree with Jessi. I like .com's over anything else. As a general rule for me, the shorter, the better.

I don't mind putting numbers in the mix, but as Jessi points out, the idea for the site is imperative first no?
