Do you put up a list of banned members with the reasons why they were banned? Do you think it's a good idea to exhibit that to the members or those information are exclusive for the forums staffs only? Share your views.
I wouldn't do this. no. For one thing, I wouldn't see the point in doing so but also, I feel it does kind of infringe on their privacy a little bit. (My view) Say if you got banned for doing posting pictures of yourself in a derogatory way (Example) but in reality, you were not that way inclined, how would you feel if such a reason got out into the public domain of the forum and then you found the opinions people had of you had changed? I know of course, people may see those 'images' but a minority is better than a majority in my eyes. That said, I have seen this on a couple forums before and all that happened was it fostered a culture of whiny people either going "Lololol, XXX is banned, he is a such a n00b" or "Omgg, plz unban this guy, he done nothing wrong!" which is annoying both ways really. But hey, that's just me.
We have private logs in our staff room for real people who we ban or warn (Automated spammers just get deleted) but we would never display that info publicly as why would anybody else apart from staff need to know?
We have a staff forum for problem users and if there been banned, but other then that no. It wouldnt be fair to name shame them in such a manner.
I don't believe there should be an "offenders" list, you might want those people to come back eventually... Besides, if you're banning them, most members will probably know why from the offenders conduct.
I don't dwell on negative stuff. People know my rules (if not I'll send them to read them). If they break them, they'll get warned. If they keep on doing it, they get banned. That's it. I block IPs and email addresses and won't waste time with them anymore. I have a forum to run, not make lists
I wouldn't put up a public list because it's kind of pointless to 'show off' the people who have been banned. In a way, your giving them a tribute if you put them on a page listing them all for everyone to see. I believe that the reasons a member was banned should stay between the staff and the member in question.
Good point, but some people would still be unhappy to have gotten banned on a forum and thus would stir up trouble and an upraising too.
I don't show banned members, why would non-staff need to know why members are banned, if they want to know why they can ask the person via email or another website or ask one of the staff, not very likely they'll be told why though.
Nah, a public list would not be a good idea. As @Haze mentioned, then you have trolls who just comment on it all the time. Plus, as @ShadyX said, who really needs to see the logs besides the staff? They are the ones who ban the people, so they are the ones who need to be privy to the information
On a forum I owned a while back I used to keep a list of banned members and the reasons but since I started up my new forum last year I haven't really found a reason for members to know all that information. Usually the only members that really get banned on my forum are members that have managed to slip through that spam. Usually if a member gets banned for a really serious offence and we feel that members need to know the reason behind their ban or if the member that was banned was popular on the forum then a thread will be posted explaining so members know and understand.
Im not usually ban someone because they are not doing anything bad yet,and if i were to going to ban someone yeah i would keep a log just to remember the reason why i banned him.
I don't think we do have one eh, Shortie? Just in case we did, I haven't noticed it... but I think its pretty useful to have one.
I wouldn't give out the reason in public.. no.. I feel that would be a breach of privacy even if the member was in the wrong.
Obviously if i could not gave him/her a reason so send me a email with another account saying this "why you banned me?" and my answer is always same i.e "you are spammer"
I prefer to explain to the banned the reason, simply and gently. I don't make any wall of the banned: this would be excessive.
This seems to be a way of getting back at them, naming and shaming them publically. In my eyes, it would come across a bit petty - they're banned, it's done, move on.
Agree with ^. Banned list do not need to be publicized, it will spoil the reputation of your forum and portray the forum in a bad light
Whenever i banned a member i give him a solid reason, it's unfair banned a member without any reason...
